Random helicopter routes: from rooftop helipads to offshore platforms
Most route generators assume you need a runway. With a helicopter, you don’t.
Select Helicopter (~110 kt) in the aircraft profile, and SkyRandom drops the runway requirement completely (Min Runway: None (VTOL)). Your route can start or end at any airport or heliport in our database. That opens up a whole world of landing sites fixed-wing pilots never get to see.
What does that look like in practice?
A few helicopter routes SkyRandom users have recently generated:
L10-A → Middenmeer (EHLL → EHMM): from a gas platform in the Dutch North Sea back to the mainland. 46 nm, about 25 minutes. A classic offshore crew-change run.
Diplomata Empresarial → Mont Blanc (SJDR → SIHY): helipad to helipad in Brazil, a country with one of the busiest helicopter scenes in the world. 79 nm, about 43 minutes.
Kraków-Czyżyny → Piotrków Trybunalski (EPKC → EPPT): a relaxed cross-country hop across southern Poland. 79 nm, about 43 minutes.
Shantou Waisha → Kinmen (SWA → KNH): a short over-water crossing. 106 nm, just under an hour.
How it works.
Set your desired cruising time (20 to 300 minutes). Choose Helicopter (~110 kt) as your aircraft profile. Hit 'Surprise Me'.
SkyRandom calculates the distance based on your flight time at 110 knots and picks a random origin and destination, airport or heliport, that fit. Every route comes with a boarding pass, and as always there’s a chance of a rare or golden ticket.
Please consider that heliports and offshore platforms are often small or even missing in default scenery. Check what your simulator has before you go, or look for add-on scenery. Shorter flight times (30 to 60 minutes) suit helicopters best, and they make great “one more flight before bed” sessions. Offshore routes are the best of the lot. Landing on a moving deck in North Sea weather is a challenge in any sim.
Fly a helicopter route and tell us how it went. Send us your best (or most terrifying) landing through the contact page. We’re always open to feedback, bug reports, and route stories. Perhaps it will be featured on our upcoming YouTube channel?
Happy flying!
