Skies over Rio: 35 minutes of pure magic

We set the timer to 45 minutes and picked the Cessna 172. Hit generate and SkyRandom handed us Rio de Janeiro. Not a busy hub. Not a transatlantic route. A VFR low-and-slow tour of one of the most visually stunning places on Earth.

The Route

Straight-line distance 64 nautical miles and estimated flight time 35 minutes from Galeão Airport, SBGL to São Pedro Da Aldeida Airport,SBES in Brazil. Plenty of fuel in the 172, and a sky full of things to look at. Departing from Rio, we climbed out over Guanabara Bay and almost immediately the statue appears — Cristo Redentor, arms spread wide at 710 metres above sea level, watching from the top of Corcovado mountain. In the Cessna, we were eye-level with one of the most recognisable landmarks in the world.

From there, the route traced the coastline due east. Copacabana stretched out below us — the famous crescent of sand, the beachfront promenade, the mosaic pavements from 1,500 feet looking like brushstrokes on a canvas. We banked gently and followed the coast passing Sugarloaf Mountain, a famous plane spotter spot while leaving Ipanema behind us, heading towards smaller fishing villages tucked between green hills and the South Atlantic.
